Until the Nikah

01 · The Chronicle

What Gegu remembers

Four entries from the family book. No grand speeches. Just a small town slowly accepting that Ibrahim and Fauziya now come as a pair.

Mother's Day
Chapter I

Mother's Day

The women who prayed before the rice was measured

Before the contract, before the feast, the mothers were honoured. This is wise. Mothers remember everything. Fauziya's mother and Ibrahim's mother did not speak like government officials. They spoke like women who had buried worries and watered hope in the same bowl. The children listened. The children always listen too late.

The Nikah
Chapter II

The Nikah

The word spoken where heaven is invited as witness

On the morning appointed, the Nikah was read and received. No theatre. Only the solemn beauty of a promise that does not joke. Ibrahim and Fauziya answered yes in front of witnesses who will tell the story correctly and incorrectly for years. The town added another line to its memory and another reason to cook heavily.

The Walima
Chapter III

The Walima

Bread, joy, and the village pretending it is not full

After the contract comes the table. The Walima is not vanity. It is gratitude with jollof. Elders ate slowly on purpose. Young people took photos as if photos were also food. The couple moved among their people like two cups passed hand to hand: warm, full, slightly trembling, and unable to hide behind any plate.

Gegu, September 12
Chapter IV

September 12

What the town will witness

On the twelfth of September, Gegu opens its gates. Not to strangers, to family, and to everyone who has carried this story this far. Come with your blessing, your humour, and shoes that can survive a compound. Do not try to outdress the bride. She will win.

02 · Correspondence

Letters to the couple

We have written to each other enough. This page is for you. Leave a blessing, an advice, or a warning delivered with love. Every letter enters the family book.

Dear Ibrahim & Fauziya,

03 · The Gatherings

Three occasions

One marriage, three gatherings: Mother's Day, the Nikah, and the Walima. Do not confuse the feast with the contract, or you will arrive hungry and still miss the Imam.

04 · The Road

Travel & stay

Gegu does not hide. It also does not send a bus. Come by road. If you get lost, ask a child. The child knows.

Arrival

Nearest major town: Lokoja. Come by road from Abuja, Enugu, or Benin as your route allows. There is no polite way to arrive late to a Nikah. Plan the journey with margin, not optimism.

Note

Mention "Ibrahim & Fauziya" when arranging stays in Lokoja. September is a busy month for every village that enjoys food and opinions.

05 · Your Word

RSVP

Reply before 15 August so the women can count the pots. A late answer is not a sin, but it confuses the rice.
